This story was written by Jane Austen who is one of the great female authors in 19C. I like her novel “Pride and Prejudice” very much and I’ve wanted to read her other novels for a long time. So I chose this book for my book review this time. In her novel she portrayed the society which she actually lived.
This is a story about two sisters whose names are Elinor and Marianne. They lived in a middle-class society in England. The story begins with their father’s death. At that time, the money and the properties which inherit from father was very important. But they couldn’t inherit any money or properties from their father. Because their mother was the second wife of him and their father’s will was to give all the money and properties to their step-brother. So they had to find a suitable husband to keep living in a same condition as they’ve lived.
Elinor and Marianne were getting along very well with each other. However their characters and their tastes to men were completely different. Elinor was calm and sensible person and she liked a man who was just as same as her. It took her a little while to fall in love with a man, Edward, who is her sister-in-law’s brother. She didn’t show her feeling so much to the others. On the other hand, Marianne was passionate and demonstrative. She liked a man who was handsome and young. She fell in love with a man, Willoughby, at the first sight. It was easy for others to know her feeling. Before she meets him, she met a man, Colonel, who was in his 30s. Colonel became liking her but she didn’t. It was because he was not attractive to her. He was too calm and old to her.
They believed that they could get married to the men but it’s reported that both of them would get married to other women. It was interesting to see that they act different when they were deserted. Elinor hid her sadness. Marianne became so emotional.
At the end, Elinor get married to Edward as she desired and Marianne get married to Colonel. She found out that Colonel is superior to Willoughby as a human being even though he is older and not handsome. The story ends with happiness.
I enjoyed the story very much. It was similar to “pride and prejudice”. Both stories are featured two sisters. The author, Jane Austen, based her novels on the real society around her. And she had an older sister like the heroines. I think Elinor and Marianne were her sister and herself.
