A brief explanation of Martin Luther King Junior

46years ago, a black man in the picture made a speech in front of hundreds of thousands of people. It was August 28, 1963. There was held a big demonstration “March on Washington” in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, the capital of America, on the day.

The black man, Martin Luther King Junior, repeated “I have a dream.” many times in his over-15min-long speech. Therefore people recognize his speech as “I have a dream.” His dream was to end segregation and discrimination. Long time ago, black people were brought to the U.S. from Africa as slaves but they were not slaves anymore as of 1963. However, segregation and discrimination against black people were accepted at that time.


For example, black people, who were also called colored, were not allowed to drink water from water tanks for white people. Not only water tanks but also schools, restrooms, pools and even transportation such as buses were separated by race.



Martin Luther King Junior also known as “Reverend King” stood up to protest in 1955 when a black woman was arrested as she didn’t give up her seat to a white man on the bus since he had experienced similar discrimination when he was a high school student. Since then, Rev. King devoted his life to seek freedom and equality for black people under Gandhi’s nonviolent philosophy.

In1964, Rev. King got Nobel Peace Prize to honor his enormous contribution. Four years later, he was assassinated. He was 39 at that point in time. However, his will is still alive in many people’s hearts and the current American president Obama is one of them.
